In May 2022 some 60 choirs from all over the world will gather in Cornwall for the International Male Choral Festival.
The event, held every two years, is a remarkable way of keeping male choral singing alive and helping publicise its joys (and health benefits) to a wider audience.
The Festival is a non-profit company, and registered charity whose aims include the advancement of the education and skills of adult choral singers and encourage and develop the music skills of composers of all ages.
A series of concerts take place over six days in most major towns in the county. Most concerts are in the evening but a few are organised at lunch time in Truro Cathedral. (Note: Truro’s magnificent cathedral is one of only three in the United Kingdom with three spires!)
More than 3000 singers will be taking part and there will be a competition at the end of the week at Truro Cathedral for those choirs wishing to take part. Supporters from across the world join their choirs and the events are a major draw for holidaymakers.
‘In addition to concerts and other public singing activities, the Festival includes symposia, workshops, master classes and tuition sessions for directors and singers.’
It is organised with the aim of developing greater strength across the male voice movement in a spirit of musical friendship.
